Expertise
Expertise can be defined in several different ways. Expertise I believe can be described as an overall well rounded knowledge in a particular field. For example, I play the saxophone which is a very diverse instrument in the styles it can play. All though there are some people that play the saxophone focus only on jazz or only on classical saxophone, and I don’t personally believe that is expertise of that particular instrument. To be an expert at saxophone you have to be able to do one expertly and the other at the very least proficiently, because only knowing one wouldn’t make the player well rounded and at least in my eyes an expert.
To me being an expert in my field is hugely important to me because we have all had those kinds of teacher before who don’t really know what they are talking about. The other part of this expertise actually being a good teacher and knowing how to teach, because the inverse of the previous statement is probably also too being that most of us have probably had a teacher who was intellectually and expert in their field but wasn’t able to teach what he knew due to insufficient knowledge of teaching skills. So to be an expert music educator I hope to be just that, and expert in music and an expert in education.
