Extracurricular Activities
I believe that being involved in extracurricular activities is very important in the development of children and adolescents. More kids should be involved in extra curricular activities, social or athletic. When I become a music educator I will facilitate more activeness in being involved with extracurricular activities because it teaches kids skills that they could not get in a normal classroom environment. For example it is hard to teach time management skills to a group of kids in a classroom setting, but when they are living out having to budget time for a sport or other activity they learn time management and organization through experience (AG 2.9). Being in a large group environment where students are working together often to achieve a goal does so many positives for children. Every student feels like they are a part of something, this contribution they give will give them a feeling of good self worth, making them know and feel that they are apart of something bigger than themselves. With that pride of being in that extracurricular organization comes the raising of students self esteem because now the students will feel like they have found a place they belong (AG1.3)(Pano,
G., & Markola) . Along with those benefits another huge plus to being involved in extracurricular activities is that it gives students a great way to build solid relationship skills and strong social skills. Being in in a large group environment will build these as social interactions and relationship building is almost inevitable in a large group of people that all share a common interest or goal.
So as a teacher i do believe it is my job to be an advocate for extracurricular activities as they teach things in the classroom that students wouldn't be able to learn otherwise(AG5.4).
