Standard #1: Learner Development.
The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
Understanding learner development is essential to be able to identify the tendencies and habits and how they change as they get older. It is important to know how students learn at a particular age because you wouldn’t’ want to teach a classroom of 6th graders like they were freshman in high school. Knowing how a student learning habits change as they get older will make me an effective music educator.
Currently I am working towards this more. I have already completed an educational psychology course specifically geared to teach me these important concepts. In this class I was taught specific knowledge about child psychology, skill development, and information retention that will further my effectiveness as a teacher. I am also currently enrolled in a multi-cultural education class which is teaching me the different habits and tendencies of students from various cultures.
The greatest opportunity anyone has for learning to be a teacher is to actually get out into the field and teach. So I hope to further my education on the habits of students through observing them in the field through volunteer work and student teaching opportunities that I will be presented with in the future.
