Standard #8: Instructional Strategies.
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
Not every student learns the same way, which is why it is important to make sure as a teacher that our instructions are as diverse as they are clear and thought out. In music not everyone is going to grasp a topic as easily as others. Some students might not understand for example what a “phrase” is simply by giving a definition. At that point the teacher must be able to know another way to teach this concept to his or her student. A music teacher would have many different ways to do this, they could play a phrase for example to show the students what a phrase is like. Also the teacher could play a piece of music and ask the kids to raise their hands at the beginning of each new phrase, the point being that some of these approaches will work on some students and not on others, it is important to remember how to context lessons so students can best understand them.
Currently my level of instruction giving I would say is pretty average. I understand music well enough to be able to get most of my thoughts across pretty clearly. However I’m good at doing what I know works for me. I am still unsure of yet whether or not I will do a good job at teaching someone who learns differently than I do.
I plan to get better at instruction giving, this will come through a more confident music background as I continue to take music classes and broaden my horizons that way. It will also come from taking many of the fine education classes offered at Ball State that are aimed to teach students about how children learn and develop and also how kids from different cultures might also learn differently aswell.
