Standard #9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice.
The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.
Music Teachers can never stop learning and growing in their musicianship, it’s part of their jobs. Teachers need to learn from a lot of different sources, like going to teaching conventions or getting feedback from students. However teachers need to also be able to learn from themselves. This means evaluating themselves as an effective instructor of his or her subject, perhaps setting up a video camera to watch a class later, any way a teacher can evaluate his or herself is a step in the right direction to improving teaching effectiveness.
I have some experience in evaluating myself on teaching effectiveness, because all ready I have taught a class and recorded myself teaching it. I got to watch the video back later and I really learned a lot from it. I was able to analyze what teaching strategies worked well in engaging students and which ones didn’t.
Another great thing about the music education program at ball state is I will have time and time again to evaluate my teaching. This semester I have already recorded my teachings twice, and to match that we are also getting feedback on our teaching from both my peers and my teachers. This trend will also continue until I graduate and self-evaluation is something I will be good at by the time I graduate.
